Gandhi was assinated by a Hindu extremist named Nathuram Godse on January 30, 1948. Nathuram thought that Gandhi was being too sympathetic to the Muslims. The last words Gandhi said were “Hey Rama” which meant “Oh God”. Millions of people mourned for Gandhi including Jawaharlal Nehru who was Gandhi’s closest friend and who had become the prime minister of India, paid a moving tribute to Gandhi .The great leader was given a traditional Hindu funeral and his body was burned on a funeral pyre. His urn of ash is still buried in Raj Ghat in a great decorated Samadhi.
